The city would have spent $19,000 on the July 4th fireworks display had they not tragically gone off in a huge explosion at an Esparto (Yolo County) storage area. The conflagration claimed seven lives. The city released a request for proposal, inviting pyrotechnic companies to offer bids and plans to put on the annual show at Lodi Lake. Devastating Pyrotechnics won the contract; however no money had exchanged hands, says city information czar Nancy Sarieh. “The city of Lodi’s vendor was Devastating Pyrotechnics, Inc., and $19,000 would have been payable to the vendor had the fireworks show occurred,” she says. Given the tragedy with fireworks that were destined for Lodi, does the city have any legal liability? No, says Sarieh.
