About Town – FRIDAY, 2/14/25
Former Lodi city councilman Shakir Khan is scheduled to be in court again on March 3 when jury selection begins in a trial that will consider if Khan’s assets were obtained illegally, according to Erin Haight, public information officer for the District Attorney’s office. You’ll recall that Khan plead “no contest” to a host of felony charges, including voter fraud, EDD fraud, money laundering, tax evasion, and operating an illegal gambling establishment in Stockton over a year ago. If the jury decides Khan paid for assets using illegal funds, there’s a legal process to determine what will happen with them, says Haight. Khan has been out of jail pending formal sentencing, the D.A. says. When Khan decided not to contest the charges against him, he accepted a plea deal that would send him to county jail for about two years. His attorney Allen Sawyer said at the time he expects Khan to only serve a year with good behavior credits and time served. Khan resigned from office when he was arrested a second time by the sheriff’s department, but immediately tried to rescind it, saying he was coerced. Though the state attorney general said the resignation could be challenged in superior court, Khan apparently never pursued it. Ramon Yepez was appointed by the city council to fill Khan’s District 4 unexpired term and went on to be elected to the seat last November.
OPENING SOON: The Maison Lodi café will open next Friday at Wine and Roses, according to the resort. It will be the first Charlie Palmer Concept café in Lodi Wine Country, we’re told. They will feature pastries crafted in collaboration with Healdsburg’s Quail & Condor Bakery, a French farmers market experience including traditional rotisserie chicken and Pain au Levain (sourdough bread), fresh ingredients sourced from local farms and the hotel’s own gardens, and a selection of house-made goods, cookbooks, local olive oils, and honeys available for purchase.
